A gynecologist will use a swab to take a sample from the area around your cervix to determine if there are any cancer cells present. It's a fairly simple, but somewhat invasive test for females. As invasive as it may seem though, it is crucial in catching any cancer in it's earliest stages to prevent more divesting problems.

Actually years ago in some sates you needed to have a pap test (to check for diseases) before you were able to get a marriage license.
