the subject is you're slowly killing your fish! Yours is the weaker one, so it is showing indicators quicker, yet they'll the two die ahead, and exceptionally quickly. i does not keep a snail in a nil.5 gallon tank, no longer to show 2 Bettas! in case you elect to maintain them in a divided tank, get a 10 gallon, or on the least a 5 gallon, and in high quality condition it with a divider. Bettas do superb in 5 gallon tanks, yet can manage in 2.5 gallon tanks. Which ever you elect, it may well be heated and function a delicate filter out. If the water does not freely circulate in the time of the divider, placed a heater and filter out on the two aspects. If the divider is sparkling, placed some tall (real or silk) flora alongside it so they do no longer would desire to stare at one yet another each and all of the time. do no longer use plastic flora in Betta tanks! be sure the water point is low sufficient that they'd't leap from one part to the different. Bettas are wonderful jumpers! in case you try this and carry out weekly water transformations of 20-25%, your Bettas will stay long, healthful lives. A Betta can stay 5 years or greater if stored in solid circumstances. do no longer try this and Blondie probable won't stay to work out Christmas, and the different one would be long gone in the previous spring! i can almost assure it! Get some books and/or circulate to 3 online boards approximately Bettas. and aquarium retaining. You curiously have lots to learn approximately those dazzling fish.

betta's can be very territorial, especially males, but females can be as well. She is probably trying to let the person know "hey, dont come any closer" Its just her self-protection, and her being cautious.

How big of a tank is she in? How long has it been running? Do you have filters hooked up to it? Have you cycled the tank? To be safe, test the water params to make sure they are in a safe range. If you dont have a test kit, you can go to petsmart, and bring in a small water sample, and they will test it for free. It could be that the ammonia/nitrites are too high, but its always better to be safe then have a sick and dying fish. 95% of illness in fish is due to bad water quality.

Good luck

Sounds like she's on the defense or that she's being protective, she doesn't sound sick. As long as you take proper care of her water and don't over feed her, or under feed her, or keep ookie food leftovers built up, she should be fine. Females also may live in a community tank provided there are not any other bettas.

Are you sure she's a female? or might it be a male displaying this aggressiveness? Does the fish blow bubble nests (I believe this to be male behavior)?

I have a male and female Betta, the female does that every time I take the lid off of the tank...ever heard of Pavlov? He rang a bell, and then fed his dog...after a while, he could ring the bell, and with or with out food, the dog would start to drool...I can't think of the exact name for the experiment. It is basically conditioning behavior.

Bettas are strange little fish, mine does the same thing. It's normal I guess. What I do is drop a pellet of food in there with it and it's good

Believe it or not, shes only acting scared. Both male and female bettas make there fins big, puff out there gills, and open there mouths wide to make themselves look bigger. Its a scare tactic to ward of enemies.

This is called begging. You betta recognizes that people feed her. She's trying to get you to feed her. All my bettas, and mollies do this. Mainly as it works. I tend to decide to feed them now, rather at their normal time. Don't be fooled bettas always act hungry if they are healthy, and will happily eat themselves to death. See bettatalk link for pictures of betta bellies to see if you are over or under feeding.)

Well my fish starts getting all hyper to. But my fish doesn't open its mouth like that. Maybe you should clean the tank.

It's normal. My male betta, Blackbeard, does the same thing when he doesn't expect me to. The betta just got spooked is all.
