Occaisionally when I jog in the evenings, in the field behind my house, ATV riders will kick up a whole bunch of dust. I obviously inhale some of this while jogging. Therefore, how harmful is it to inhale dust periodcally in this manner?

As bad as it is to inhale the dust in your home before cleaning day.

It shouldn't be too harmful if you inhale through your nose, since most of the dust should get filtered by the... eh... hair. When that happens, just blow your nose.

If you inhale it through your mouth, though, there isn't really anything to keep the dust out. The cilia in your lungs should eventually filter out any dust that gets in (which comes out in your mucus), so it shouldn't cause too much harm, but I'd advise you to try to inhale more through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Otherwise you'll end up with a lot of mucus, and if there's harmful bacteria in the air with the dust (which there generally is), you have a higher chance of getting sick and/or getting respiratory problems.

I'd think it would be bad for your lungs, you need oxygen when you are jogging and if the air is full of dust, you are getting diminished oxygen. Is it hard to run and do you have trouble catching your breath?

it could probably create some kind of respiratory problems. you should contact you doctor so the can assess the damage. you may want to wear a mask when running in that area

Run with a surgeon's mask. It's great, except for the tan line.
