I had a difference of opinion with an ops manager today and ended up giving in my resignation and walking out of a £25000 job.
I live on my own, have many debts and don't know what to do now. However, I took a lot of undeserved criticism and feel I did the right thing.
I'm very angry as I've worked there for 11 years and gave 110%. Guess I better start job hunting!

AND.... What's you're question?

How terrible for you. I would suggest, if you are up to it - is to take an action for Constructive Dismissal (which means you go to a Solicitor or a Barrister (which the public now have access to) and say that things were so unbearable - that you had no choice but to leave - This is what Constructive Dismissal is. The other think is that some law firms do have times during the week where they give free legal advice, and they will be able to tell you whether or not you have a good case. You will also need to remember incident of criticism etc - also have any other staff left over the same thing. 11 years is a long time at a workplace - which is also in your favour. I am afraid that there is a lot of intimidation and bullying in the workplace these days - which is not good - it needs to be stamped out. You may also have a case for Personal Injury - (need to check though). You will also need to tell all your creditors that you (if you are off sick at the moment or on JSA (which may not be the case if you walked out - but they will look at all the circumstances) what has happened - and they should be lenient if you make a reasonable offer - BUT IT HAS TO BE WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD - NOT WHAT THEY WANT. I hope this is helpful. Dont worry - you will soon land on your feet again

Hi Teisha
Sorry to hear that!
That is just one of the reasons I don't like a job!
I much rather have a YOB "your own business"

I have found it is much easier to build a business with a program that I don't have to convince someone that they need to buy my product!
May I also suggest, add a couple of streams of income.
If you look at any of the truly wealthy professionals, they all have multiple streams of income! I have over 10!

I'm going to show you two that I think are the best and anyone can do it!
If done correctly, you can have multiple streams of income at the same time!
There are multiple reasons why I do more then one program; multiple steams of income is just one reason. Another example, if you were promoting your product company and your lead doesn't want to be involved with a product company, what would you do when they said no? If you only have one program, that lead would be wasted, but if you can give your lead choices, that's where you will make the big bucks.

The first business to check out is: YTB, "Your Travel Business," on my three sites #1. www.wantagreatlife.com then, www.howifiredmyboss.com and last www.billydtravel.com

The second business is GDI "Global Domains International." My site is www.wantagreatlife.ws

The reason I'm showing you "YTB" first... is because I believe it is the best opportunity that I have seen!

The reason I show you GDI is.. it is something anyone can afford!

Thank you,

I'd suggest that you take a few days (maybe just the weekend) to let your anger go. If you don't let it go, it will show in your job interview. No one wants to hire someone that's angry.

Determine what your strategy will be in your job hunt. Specifically, you need to figure out what you're going to say when people asked why you're looking or why you left your last job. Again, you don't want to come across as being angry. Also, recruiters may not like the fact that you just walked out. I would suggest that you not mention that specifically. Instead, you can talk about how you were there for 11 years and wasn't able to make the level of impact that you desired.

You don't want to paint the picture that you're a hothead and may storm out of the office at any moment.

Can you find some temporary employment while you look?

Can you get some good referrals from co-workers at your last job (the one you just left)?

I hope this helps and I wish you the best.

BTW, I help people get out of debt so contact me if you need some specific advice on that subject.

Not the brightest idea you could have done.

Your better move was to raise your disagreement as a greivance, follow your companies greivance procedure, and got it sorted.

You are now going to have to explain to a future employer that you abandoned your job (You walked out without giving the prerequisite notice), for the reason that you had a little disagreement with one member of staff.

Or was it that you put up with so many years of bad treatment, and instead of trying to fix it with the employer, you just left them staffless, until they can replace you. Finding good staff can be tricky for some positions or organisations.

Lastly, future employers are going to want to ask to contact your employer. What do you say when they ask for this one.

If you do want to be reasonable, It is not too late. Go back tto your HR manager, explain what the Ops manager and you disagreed on, and that you acted in the heat of the moment, and you know that walking out like that was not fair to the company.

You will face disciplinary action for this negligence, and it may be tough, but it is better than the other options. The recruitment market is so competitve, you may have difficulties getting a new job, especially with a tarnished reputation like that.

If oyu do still feel you must leave, and the company will not be able to resolve the issue, then you could claim constructive dissmissal. Give them a week to try to sort it, and this will serve as your legally required weeks notice.

Best of luck in whatever you choose to do.

Well not what you want to hear, but you've cut off your own nose to spite your face.... you don't sound like a person with debts and responsibilities... You are probably in breach of your employment contract as you probably have to give notice.

Next time, grit your teeth and take the criticism... its part of being a grown up and if you are really not happy with your workplace, then I find a good tip, is to find another job before jacking in your old one!!!!

2 options.... go back grovelling and tell them you had something happen in your personal life to make you react that way and you are sorry....

Or go to the temping agency in the morning.....

In any event, you are in breach of contract and if you're still hell bent on walking out in this immature way, then give them notice.

We all have differences of opinion and we are all at work to do a job, but ultimately its your line managers decision that is final, no matter how much you disagree with it.

Yes, it doesn't sound a nice position to have been in and it does sound as though you will be better out of it although it doesn't seem as though you had thought it all through! Don't worry though, as long as you have good qualifications, experience, track record and a positive attitude to work, I don't think you will be without a job too long. There are businesses out there who have been waiting ages to get someone - you start looking and you don't know what you might find. Good for you ... from what you've said it sounds like you deserve a job where you will get more appreciation for your efforts and achievements. All the best with the job hunting.

Good luck to you! I agree it's time to start job hunting and I hope someone at your old job will provide you with a reference letter. Finding a job isn't easy but putting up with a complete tool that micromanages and has control issues will drive a person to the brink of sanity. I speak from experience, only I'm using this as leverage for more money....

As I said before, Cheers, good luck! Go get good and sloshy and start looking first of the week!

Maybe it's time to go back and apologize. We all have our little "temper tantrums" from time to time. Maybe this would be a good opportunity for you to openly discuss the criticism and have something good come from this minor meltdown. If you've been there 11 years and have given 110%, I'd certainly be willing to hear an employee's apology if I were your boss. Good help is hard to find and expensive to train, so swallow your pride and apologize ASAP. Isn't it also possible that your boss might regret what he said? We're all human, and we come into work with our human problems and issues. Maybe he's embarrassed about all of this, too.
