You need one so the other can work...need a catcher to call the game and the pitcher to control the game...catcher is usually called the battery mate and it's only fitting that the word "batter" is in this term

Both ends of the "battery" work together to get outs.
ex. two strikes on the batter. the catcher calls for a slider to fall away from the batter. the batter swings and misses. the both worked together

battery makes an engine go on...so does the p/c combo...they make the game start to run
