I realize that this guy is a defensive stud but his offensive numbers aren't that consistent.

The A's are historically a small-market team that happens to be competitive. GM Billy Beane relies most on his farm system and statistics to make any decisions, thus we have "Moneyball". Guys like Giambi, Tejada, and others wern't resign because they would have put "big" dents on the payroll for a team that's trying to save money and Zito is about to become a former A's in the near future. Chavez was those rare talent that Beane wanted to keep because he was patient on the plate, hit for power at his position, better defense, and was younger than those guys that left (Beane wanted him to carry the franchise). I guess Beane might start to regret keeping Chavez.

Maybe it's his personality? I don't know. But I really like Eric Chavez as a defensive guy, and a teammate. I mean, he's not the best offensive 3rd baseman in the league but he's definitely not bad either. He's actually on track to break the record for most HRs by an A's player so that should say something right there.
