Pro Football has 32 teams with around 80 players each, That's 2,560

Baseball has 30 teams in the Majors with about 30 per team. That's 900.

The NBA has 30 teams with around 16 players each. That's 480.

Hockey has 30 teams with about 22 players per. That's 660.

That means for MAJOR league team sports, there are less than FIVE THOUSAND athletes.

For the minors and fringe team sports, let's say there's another 10,000 max. Not counting golf and other individual pro sports, that means there are 15,000 pro team sport athletes in the US.

There are about 300 million people in the US and it's roughly 50/50 male/female, so there's 150M males. Of that, there are about 40 million boys under age of 21. So that means the odd of one of these boys become a pro athlete, without consideration of ability or other factors is approximately 2,667 to one.

Better odds than the lottery, but I wouldn't want to stake my future on it either.
