My land turtle was gnawed on by my dog for a few minutes. He scratched and bit off little pieces on the edge of the shell and drew blood in some places. The soft parts are ok. The shell edges are bleeding. Can anyone recommend anything special to apply to the "wounds"? Where I live, nobody treats turtles, only dogs and cats. The turtle seem to be ok, they cannot express pain! I applied some antiseptic, but put the turtle inside, as flies were beginning to be drawn to the blood. Thanks for any advice!

Knowing where you live and the enviroment makes a huge difference in what you can do. Also knowing what kind of turtle you have...

Neosporin works well on most reptile wounds. There is not much else you can do. Depending on the damage, the shell may need to be "repaired." There are vets that do this but you may have to take a trip to get to one.

If it were my turtle, I would get him to the vet immediatly! (sorry for spelling)

Turtles can feel injuries on their shell, even scratches. Many people don't think they feel anything on their shells. But they do.

I was petsitting for a friend of mine, who owned a lake turtle (probably a painted turtle). My chihuahua mix got in the tank and was running around the house with him in his teeth. Of course, I screamed!

That only made him stop and start crunching on the shell. He had scratches on his shell and a bite mark, where my chi had bit through the side of the shell. I immediatly cleaned him off to get any germs off the shell from the dog. Then, my sister brought me some kind of antibacterial waterproof salve and I put this on the hole.

He lived through it, a happy turtle. The next spring he was big enough to let loose in the swamp, back where he was supposed to go.

Don't worry. Tortoises recover from such injuries well as long as the basic cares are good- good temps, good light, good diet, etc.

Just keep it clean and keep flies away. A little Bag Balm can help disinfect it and usually helps keep flies away.

A 'hospital care' program might also help- top quality foods and vitamins, slightly warmer temps, cleaner tank, more shade options but still good quality lighting, and lower stress (noise, vibrations, disturbances, etc.

i would do a lot of internet research... my turtle got hurt and no one around here treats them either but there are a ton of websites devoted to turtles, just have patience until you find the right one. definately keep it away from your dog though
