I'm assuming your pool contractor is telling you that a timer is required by code. If that's the case I would be skeptical. You can probably find code requirements for your state with a simple yahoo search.

I have a pool and it has a timer which make it more convenient for me. I don't have to go to the pool pump and turn it on manually, and I don't have to remember to turn it off. Given the overall expense of a pool, a timer is a small cost and adds a great deal of convenience.

MY timer on my pool is for allowing the pump/cleaner to run at allotted times.

timer on a pool? you mean a pool with a whirpool/hot tub? Probably so people don't stay in too long and get heat exhaustion or so it doesn't get left on all night.

I'd guess it's to keep the filter from working too hard. That'd spare the motor and save energy.
