what is the extension of the picture? usually, i make sure that i go to tools and folder options and make sure that i uncheck the part that says, hide file extensions, that way u can see the extensions u're working with
then i just right click the image, click rename and then rename the file e.g if it was girl.bmp, i rename it to girl.jpg, it's a short cut for me and it usually works, i'm not sure if it's the correct way, but it works for me, u'll get a message saying that some files may become unusable if u change the extension, just click ok and u'll get a jpeg pic

when you save your file save the file using the .jpg extension

When you go to save the file, you chage it to .jpg instead of the form it is in now.
