I am a senior in college and I need a job, but I plan to go to graduate school. What is the best degree in art for graduate school? Do you find art education being cut?

If you decide to get a degree in Art Education, it does not necessarily mean you have to teach at a high school or elementary school. You would also be qualified to teach classes at some kind of community center, work as a museum education director, or become an arts gallery director. Funding for art in many schools is being cut, but this means the demand for art classes in the community will likely go up. Also, I know several art teachers that work as graphic designers on the side to earn extra money. Don't let people discourage you from being an art teacher by telling you won't make any money, because you will. And if teaching is something you really enjoy then you should go for it. Having a job you love will make you much happier than a job that just makes you lots of money.

At this point in time the only real "market" for art teachers is at the college level, so you would need a PHD to easily find a job as an art teacher. Funding for the arts in elementary and secondary schools have been drastically reduced at state and federal levels, so many public schools do not even offer art instruction. When they do it is in a very limited capacity, like one art teacher will rotate between several schools. This does not mean there are not any jobs out there for early education art teachers, just that they are very limited right now when compared to the market for graphic artists.

You have to answer the following; Is it a priority of yours to help others learn? If yes, chose art teacher. If you want the potential of unlimited income, chose graphic designer and when you get to where you want to be, I'm sure you could find the time for some teaching too. Above all else, do what makes you the happiest.
