I do advise buying over the Internet, so long as you are very familiar with the return policy of the store you are purchasing from and you trust the store with your life. That being said, I shop for laptops online only because it is very hard for me to find a laptop with a dedicated graphics card, in store (and I don't like waiting two weeks for a custom order) but it doesn't sound like you will need that.

Here are some guidelines get a dual core processor (Core Duo) and 1GB of memory. If that's too much for you than any processor will do but I still suggest 1GB of memory. Hopefully that's enough to get you started, oh, and a 15.4" display is a good size to get. That being said, I like Acer and Toshiba laptops, hate Dell, HP and Gateway.

The best places to buy from are (in order of my preference):

http://www.newegg.com/
http://www.tigerdirect.com/
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/
http://www.mwave.com/

Note Newegg will NOT let you return a laptop under any circumstances (though an exchange can be arranged if it arrives in a non-working condition). The point is you will not be able to get a refund. My guess is the other stores have a similar policy. Happy hunting. Like Newegg because there are numerous customer reviews about the items.

Well Panthip Plaza is the IT capital of Bangkok, although I generally am a bit careful of the place. All the tourists go there and many shops you can't really trust.... Personally I would go to Fortune shopping centre in Ratchadapisek Road (Praram 9 MRT station). Check out the computer you want and make sure they load ENGLISH software. They will probably offer you two prices for the software - about 300 baht for copy software, or 1,500 baht for original. Forget the term 'legal' here. I always go for the copy software. But ask them whether the copy software can pick up the updates. Some copy software doesn't. Ask them for a proper VAT receipt. Suvarnabhumi Airport is a commercial airport. Not only from the commercial flights point of view, but also in that 'money talks'. You will notice that all the most expensive brand name shops are near the passport control, and as Thais don't easily part with money (they think tourists are rich enough and don't need more), you will find the VAT refund office a long walk away. Just produce the receipt and they should refund it. They also asked me to show them the goods - so don't pack it in you checked in baggage!

The best help I can give for buying a new laptop is:

1. Go to a shop
2. Hand over a large sum of money
3. Try not to get mixed up and ask for a lapdance (got me a slap, I can tell you)
4. Go home and look up porn on the interweb
5. Relish the fact that it is now 2 hours old and already worth hundreds less than you paid for it

Probably the internet but some stores do offer good deals if you can find them. As far as make and model. All manufactures use the basically the same hardware so you should research who has good customer service and who has a good track record on component failure. READ REVIEWS.
