Grow up folks, need has nothing to do with it. It's simple economics. The very best of our baseball players, basketball players, etc. have a very rare and very marketable skill that the public is willing to pay a premium to see, be it at the live gate or on television, which boosts ratings, which boosts what sports teams can charge for their TV rights.
You can rest assured the athletes of which you speak are cashing those kind of checks because the entities writing those checks are making a hell of a lot more money than what they are paying those athletes.
Don't like it? You gotta hit the sports franchise owners and sports leagues in the pocketbook. Stop going to games; stop watching them on TV. That will get salaries for the best players back in line when the revenue stream dries up.
Problem is: there will always be a revenue stream for something like the NFL, i.e. television will always pay a premium for broadcasting rights to professional football because it affords a network the opportunity to:
1) Capture the broadest possible audience for advertisers to market to
2) Allows the network to promote its other programming to the broadest audience possible
What the businessmen that drive the sports leagues in America do with their money is their perogative. Same with the athletes. They have a right do make the best deal they can and earn as much as possible in a relatively short career span. NEED DOES NOT FIGURE INTO THE EQUATION.
What you say about how much teachers, police, EMTs, etc are paid is very true. But you are talking about two different universes, economically speaking. I'm not saying it's right but that's the way it is.

Of course not, especially when they don't live up to their hype.
What really sucks, is as a woman, I have even less of a chance of ever getting on a sports team and making that kind of money. It's totally ridiculous and sexist.

I don't like it....because people are working to save lives such as EMTs and nurses...and they don't get good pay. Doctors are the ones who fix the torn ACLs and borken bones, sprained things...and don't get paid like the sports stars...its pathetic

Being an athlete is hard work but I do think that they shouldn't get paid as much as they do.
