Does it *have* to be generic? How about the wife letting him know what she really wants? While no one on Yahoo answers would know what she might *really* want, some generic ideas include books, flowers, chocolates, dinner at a nice restaurant, something for her hobby (whatever it might be), a piece of clothing that she'd like to have but have not bought for whatever reason, a fun weekend road trip, a gift certificate.
P.S. My fiancé got me a really expensive light fixture for my new fish tank for Valentine's day... I thought it was the most romantic thing of all - he knew I *really* wanted to set up this tank, but didn't have the money to do it at the moment. A thoughtful gift could be just about anything.
