If you don't want to go the usual method of hanging a bunch on a typical rack (buried in the back of your closet).
Your alternatives would be:
A:
Roll them up (not too tightly, or else the edges will have permanent wrinkles) then bury them in the back of your closet on a typical tie rack.
B:
Roll them, end to end until you have a big roll with about 20 to 40 per roll (again don't roll them too tightly), you can lay this inside on its side in a typical square or rectangular Gift Box, and then put as many gift boxes on thier sides inside a File Box ( the ties won't be laying on their sides, but actually on the flat side ).
C:
Another alternative would be to get one (or as many as needed) of those long flat under-the-bed-storage Plastic Storage things, the longer the better. Then figure out what part of your tie actually sits around your neck (some people like to wear a tie a little long and other prefer it a little short - right?).
Once you've determined where the approximate "sitting area" is - thats where you will effectively put a fold in the tie, this will reduce the length of the tie so that you can store as many of those things in the flat-storage-box, laying flat.
** Putting a fold is a compromise, because that is usually the part that is hidden under the fold of the collar.
You could squeeze as many as two hundred of those things in one box.
Because it is a plastic box, you can effectively seal it with Duct Tape or just use rubber cement to create a dependable seal. This ought to protect your ties from the elements and the box can be stored practically anywhere.
How should I know?
Well I confess I used to collect them too, my grand fathers basement has about twenty of those boxes with a couple thousand ties.
I collected them at first because I fancied the patterens of the fabric (both solids and prints) But I also tried to collect two of each, because I loved to make suspenders out of the ones I loved the most. I have so many that I may never get to make my own unique suspenders. well you know why.
Good luck I hope I was able to help.
mahalo!!!

It depends on how often you wear them and how many there are. I'd suggest three tie racks -- one that you can hang on a wall, stationary, for your "third tier" ties that you don't wear; a second that basically looks like a hanger with hooks to hold the ties you wear occasionally; and a motorized one (so you can scroll through all your ties at hte push of a button) for your most frequently used ties. Of course you may want to alter those based on how many you have, etc. You can get a lot of good, moderately priced tie racks. Buy cedar for the nicer scent and better preservation. Whatever you do, don't fold them up!

I remember that my dad didn't like the racks that are available to buy. He has so many ties that not even half of them would fit on one rack. So he built his own. He measured the space on the wall (length and width) on the inside of his closet, got a 2 x 4, hammered the long nails in a little bit, and basically had a rack from the top of his closet to the bottom. He still has it to this day. It is partially my fault that he has so many ties to begin with, being that every father's day, birthday, or christmas I would buy him a couple or more....I did stop, my mom hasn't though.

Actually, I made a bag out of my husband's old neck ties. I call it "The Ties That Bind" bag. We use it every time we travel on road trips. I used the "fat" lengths of the ties for the bag body, and the slender "around your neck" pieces to braid and make the straps of the bag. It's a wonderful bag, and we carry everything from snacks to puzzle books or my knitting when we go on the road.
I tell you what? If you can't find a way to store them, I would sure like to have them! Let me know!

Roll your neckties on a toilet paper roll, starting at the thin end and working out. They can be stored in a shallow box or drawer for the next time you want to wear them.

RE:
What is the best way to store neckties?
I have a great many old ties that I don't wear everyday but I don't want to throw them away. Is there a preferred way to store them so that they don't wrinkle?

There are only two best ways to store a ties 1):- Roll and place them in the boxes designed for this purpose and, 2):- You can take a Hanger which we use for hanging the belt..you can hang your ties in that, and this will keep them wrinkle free too.

If you are looking to so money. Take a string and attach it to the door across ways you can drape your tie on them that way. When you are ready to take off your tie. Remember to undo the whole tie. This will make your tie not wrinkle as much. If you want to you can press it with a warm iron.
