we've had 3 holes dug in our garden over the past month. They are quite deep and wide with loads of soil spread around. This has only happened at nights, could it be a badger?

I take it you are in the UK, English badgers come out at night they don't like to climb fences or wall, they normal look for a hole under the fence, if they cannot find one then they dig one, the holes you describe are badger holes (Badger looking for food), for some reason badger are moving into town & cities alot. Badgers are protected by law, so there is not alot you can do about it.

depending on the size of the holes i would say its a squirel, or some other neighborhood animal like a cat or stray dog... but ive had soem holes show up in my backyard and i think it might be the friendly squirell that comes to my house everyday to eat.. i dunno i wouldnt think that badgers can climb walls... but definatly stay away from them... they are not afraid to attack you even if they are not cornered... i found this out the hard way... thankfully i had a .22 shouldered and loaded. you might try buying some repellant to see if that helps...

Given the right equipment, I think they're capable of anything. Squirrels too.

I think you might be dealing with a groundhog (woodchuck) instead.
