Writing stories..how does one go about joining in a book/writer club within ones area without major travel?

If you can't find a writers group close to you, start one. Ask first at the public library as they may know of one nearby. The library also makes a good meeting place for a group if you start one. Most have free meeting rooms for the public to use.

Check out Craig's List for event postings. Also, try your local bookstore. They may have a club that comes in weekly.
