I'm curious if it's mostly older gay men? (Or if you know; I don't really know the circumstances taht brought this question about). First of all, I'll say that I'm gay and really REALLY hate public toilets. I can't pee in a urinal if there's someone else in the room, I need to use a stall. And I have germ issues with the other thing, so I don't use public lavs unless I absolutely need to. That having been said, my theory regarding this is that it's a relic of "the old days". Back when it was illegal, and viewed FAR worse than it is today, those were almost natural meeting places for rendezvous (whatever the plural of that would be). As with a LOT of things from former eras, there are some people who just don't want to let that go. I do agree with you though; it's pretty gross.

Not all gay men like public lavatories. Its only a stereotype.
The reason why some gay/bisexual men like public lavatories is because its a quick anonymous way of hooking up with another guy - the same thing happens in sauna's/bathhouses and some gay bars. You meet up with a total stranger, do whatever the both of you want at that time, and then walk away as though nothing has happened. There's no "getting to know each other", introductions or anything which leaves a footprint.
You find that a lot of people who go for anonymous encounters are either:
1. Married, or in a committed relationship.
2. Bicurious, or in the early stages of coming out as gay/bi - wanting to test the water etc.
3. Have psychological problems.
4. In denial.
5. Only want casual encounters with other men - part of their psychosexual makeup.

Well, some people, both heterosexual and homosexual, find having sex in public places a turn on - they like the added risk of being caught. While these gay men will use a rest room, the thrill seeking heterosexuals will have sex in the open in parks, in shop doorways, or a parking lot. This is a limited sub-group in both the heterosexual and homosexual population.
There is another largely historical reason why gay men did this - the public lavatories/restrooms (cottages in UK slang, Tea Rooms in US slang) became popular with gay men because this was an easy place to find other men at a time when being out as a gay man was not possible, and there were no clubs or bars they could go to. This practice is now particularly popular with straight men who wanted to have sex with other men - they wouldn't risk going to a bar where someone might recognize them, but they would have anonymous encounters in a rest room.
As a gay man, like most of my gay friends, I have been in a stable relationship for many years and do not need to seek out other men for sex in any case; and even if I did, I certainly would not go to public places for sex, because there are plenty of bars and clubs where you can meet other men if that's what you want.

Why do straight people always take a pop at gays.there but for the grace of god go you and I.Not all gays use Public Toilets, like straight guys there are gay pervs. There are loads of clubs now for gays they don't need toilets anymore. But many are married and have not come out, that is why they use Public Toilets.

I would imagine that men being men will have been having sex in public toilets as long as public toilets have existed, therefore one needs to ask, why in London are they suddenly being closed?
People caught urinating in the street do so, in my humble opinion, not that they are straight and have been forced to take such drastic action due to the selfishness of gays, but rather that they are as drunk as skunks!

Because the public lavatories are a great chance to play "cops and robbers" and risk getting caught, which is a buzzy thrill to some guys.

you cant tar arl gay men with the same brush...it just goes back to the days of the tea room trade, when homosexuality was illegal so some gay men, often in the closet/married to women would find relief in the public toilets. thankfully, we have legitimate bras now so gay folk neednt resort to such means of finding satisfaction.

Umm, those of us with no taste -don't-. I'm gay and absolutely loathe public restrooms.
"Gay men" aren't the problem. "Gay men who like having sex in public place" are. Your question makes unfair assumptions.

the view, maybe they're married or don't have their own place. by the way gay people aren't the only ones to have public sex. straight people do it in cars, on planes, in bathrooms, at the park , on the beach, and just about anywhere else just like we do.

Believe it or not, from what I've heard a lot of those men are married and have kids, or are dabbling in the "gay" thing. A lot of them don't have beds to use. Their wives are home sleeping in them.
