I read a book called An Elegant Offense which claimed that, historically, the Chinese have considered the copying of another's work to be a compliment to the original author. Is this true?

That's just their excuse for when they rip off other people's designs / TV shows / technology / clothing etc!

In China, they have a habit of taking something that's popular in other countries but hasn't yet been registered in China, and then THEY register it - under their own name - and assume the rights to make and sell that product in China ... then, when the original creator comes along to register his / her product, they get a nasty shock! Someone else already OWNS the Chinese rights to it, and the original creator doesn't have a leg to stand on ... would YOU want to try fighting for your rights in a Chinese court, against a successful Chinese national???

It's got nothing to do with being complimentary - and everything to do with MONEY!!!!
