because they have low self esteem and hurting the feelings of others get to feed their lack of ego.

As in pretty much everything, there are multiple reasons. Here are what I think, not in any particular order other than when they pop into my mind:
1) transfer of hurt -- someone hurt them, so now they hurt others. This gives them a sense of justice.
2) empowerment -- they derive a sense of empowerment in realizing their ability to affect others' lives, even if it's by hurting them. At least it's something, as if to compensate for a sense of helplessness in affecting some other elements from their own lives.
3) selfishness -- they are more focused on advancing their own lives and if doing so ends up hurting others, so be it. Although this reason actually is not part of the question since they don't necessary get any enjoyment out of this; the hurting is more a side effect than a goal.
4) psychosis -- an unusual obsession with hurting others in its own right, without cause or reasoning.
5) well-meaning -- also something causing hurt as a side effect, they feel that those being hurt will be better off in the long run. These are the ones who chant the mantra "truth hurts" and are particularly eager to bring disillusionment to those around them thinking that they are actually helping. Perhaps they enjoy being the instrument of liberating the others from their naïveté.

Not all people enjoy the pain and suffering of others. They just say and do things without thinking of how it might affect others around them. If anyone does these things on purpose, then maybe they have low self-esteem and are trying to fit in with a crowd that they think is cool or they hold in high esteem. Perhaps you should try to sit down and talk with whoever is hurting you and ask them why they treat you this way and tell them how it makes you feel.

because they have been hurt from someone else...and they have no idea what it's like to be full of love and support. they see happy people and are jealous, almost Hate them. when u have a closed mind (whether by choice, or usually by experience), u close yourself to all the positive, wonderful, amazing feelings and experiences in the world. it's horrible to live that kind of life, but the sad thing is that it's SO EASY to let things bring u down. u can't really do anything for those kinds of people but to be MORE understanding, and show MORE love, and make a great example to show others there's more to life than anger and negativity. surround urself w/ positive people, and the bad stuff that other people throw u will bounce off. be a good influence on ur friends and family, and some day they will thank you for being someone who can lift them up.

As they are insecure. To fight it they make other people try to feel worse. That way they think that people feel worse than them, and as a result in some twisted fashion they themselves start to feel better.
Best bet is to ignore it. The person trying to hurt the persons feelings will quickly give up if they don't get a quick lift from it.

Hurting other peoples feelings is one of the games people play . Such types of games are played either
*____to make fun of other when you don't like that person (of course, one can always choose to ignore instead of insulting but the negative path is always easy to tread on )
*____ to get attention or to get even . The wrongs are easily done but for the rights , effort has to be made .
Such an action is not only heartless but also lacks logic .
I personally think and strongly believe that somebody can hurt me only if i give them the importance to do so . Those who try to hurt me are not important enough for me to get hurt . And those who are important to me are so because they care for me . And if by chance they do end up hurting me , i understand accidents do happen .
So..............the crux of my Long answer is people hurt others because the others let them too , all factors apart . because if the others cant fight for themselves they deserved to be hurt for not respecting their one precious & priceless life .

I don't think that they enjoy it, however, because they are insecure, or, have been hurt in the past, they feel a misguided sense of superiority! It's no excuse I know, but I take it that you have been hurt recently?

BECAUSE YOU ARE A LOSER!!!!
Sorry, I wanted to try it and see if I could relate. I can't so I am not sure why people would be mean and try to hurt others feelings for no reason. Heck, I feel so bad about my joke, that I want to report myself, but I can't figure out how to.

Most of the time when you run across someone like that, they have very low self esteem and in there mind when you feel bad they feel better.
I know people like that and I try to avoid them like the plague, because they are always trying to bring someone down so they can feel better.
If you have someone in your life like that, I am soooooo sorry.
