A few things to check.

1. Make sure the volume is not mute, you can find the volumne control in the tray icon

2. Make sure there is connection. Vol out port is colour coded green.

3. When you are testing the sound, make sure you use a simple program such as Sound and Audio device in Control Panel. Sometimes you could get a movie or a sound file but you don't have the correct codec for it.

4. If still doesn't work try plug a headphone in, if headphone works fine then your speakers are blown. If still doesn't work, the problem is with your sound card, either get a new one or borrown it from someone to test if the sound card's problem

Verify your speakers are working by plugging a MP3 player or CD player to it. If the speakers work then we move on to the computer. Do you see the speaker icon on the lower right on the Windows taskbar? If it is not there your sound device driver software was messed up then you need to re-isnatll the audio device driver from your system CD. If the speaker icon is there then double click it to open the mixer. Check volume control as well as "mute" on all individual volume level.
