basically, in high school and in college, people refer to themselves based on their year...since both high school and college tend to be 4 year institutions, each year has a different name...freshman are first year students, sophomores are second year, juniors are third year, and seniors are fourth year....and if youre one of the unlucky ones that ends up doing a 5th year of school, youre called a super-senior!!!

its not confusing, its just ridiculous and unnecessary but i doubt it will be changed any time soon.

Here we have kindergarten (K) usually for 5 - 6 year olds. Then elementary school (grades 1 - 7), middle school (grades 8 and 9) and high school (grades 10 - 12). Freshman is someone in grade 9, Sophomore is grade 10, Junior is grade 11 and senior is grade 12. These terms also are used to refer to college students (Freshman is first year of college, sophomore is second year, etc.)

It is actually very simple. Within the high school system, the 9th grade is called freshmen(because you are new or fresh), the 10th grade is called sophomores, The 12th grade is called senior year( the eldest year you see). Now senior can also refer to older people in society as well.

It refers to the years in college and high school, and being a sophomore means being in tenth grade and being a senior means being in the twelvth grade. There are four years in high school, and that the first year is a freshmen:ninth grade, and I have told you what a sophomore is and a junior is in eleventh grade, and you know the rest.It may seem confusing at first but you will get used to it and understand it all,it's easy.Good luck.

Those names refer to the year in school that you are. They apply to high school as well as college. A freshman is a first-year student, sophomore is second-year, junior is third-year, and senior is fourth-year.
