I believe you are refering to the Chrysalids by John Wyndham. I read it years ago too.

The Chysalids by John Wyndham. Wow I read it 21 years ago when I was at school. My age has just caught up with me. The Shire horses really amazed me as I could not imagine their size. You should be able to get hold of a copy of the book still as Wyndham is still a pretty well read scifi writer, he wrote The Day of the Triffids too.

It is indeed 'The Chrysalids' by John Wyndham. It was actually set in Labrador, Canada, though.

If you like post apocalyptic fiction try 'Z for Zackariah' by Robert C' O'Brien. It's also suitable for teenagers and deals with some mature themes.

Nothing comes to mind, but you might go to Amazon.com and start with other books in that genre, and see if they recommend the book that you read.

The classic novels in this genre are;
A Canticle for Liebowitz, by Walter M. Miller, Jr.
Alas, Babylon, by Pat Frank
Lucifer's Hammer, by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle

Good luck!
