1. Check if both the PC's are on the same subnet
2. Check if the firewalls are turned off
3. Try pinging the loopback address.
Do the above steps one by one... and if they dont work then, probably try changing the cable.

manually configure the NIC's
Check the IP address on both.
check subnet mask
What type of cable also..supposed to be crossover ehterent needed

Check the IP address on both.
Make sure the subnet mask is something like 255.255.255.1
You can't use DHCP - you'll have to manually setup the IP addresses.
make sure they are in the same workgroup.

the two network cards need to have IP addresses within the same subnet.

oh..may not be on same netowrk
