i've had some plugs fitted and hes left holes all around the fittings, if you look throgh the holes you can see the wires, how do you fill the gaps without getting plaster in the fittings?

The building code says you're supposed to only have 1/8 of an inch space around these "plugs" (Electricians call them receptacles) This is so cold air doesn't enter the house. If an normal cover does not cover them there are extra large cover plates. If there is still a gap - who ever did the job was way off in ther sheetrock cutting but never fear you can spackle them by laying fiberglass tape across the gap and spreading your spackle or joint compound over it. (This will be with drywall supplies in the hardware store) You'll have to do it a few times- letting it dry inbetween and sanding to get a nice finish.

As a plasterer, if the gaps are only small (2 - 4mm), I would use a good filler such as speedline which fills gaps beautifully and can be rubbed down when dry, however if they are large gaps or holes and you want to do a proper job then switch off the power, pull the plug socket away from the wall and fill out the gaps with plaster, ensuring that it doesn't get caked round the wires. Replace when dry.

Turn the power off, remove the cover plate. Cut a piece of Styrofoam to fit the box around the receptacle. Patch the void with some dura-bond easy sand 20 minute set. Sand the patch smooth remove the foam, replace the cover plate, and tun on the power.

Use a plug cover plate. You can find them at your local hardware store.
