What has become of the heroic pastoral poetical form? Why, in these dark days, do linguists forsake it?

I think high art and low art have lost their distinction from each other. Heroism is out. Banal is in. Thus, "these dark days."

Probably because very few people would read it these days, which is unfortunate, because pastoral poetry is really elegant.
