I'm trying to connect a '98 bmw round connector to an obd2 scanner.

I live in the UK, where cars were not required to implement obd2 until around 2000. The US was required to implement obd2 in 1996 I think. My connector is under the bonnet (hood)

Let me re-phrase that then! Was OBD2 and extension/enhancement of OBD1, such that features were added. Or, was it a complete new specification? It's a simple question I think. Doh doesn't help. Leaving it to the mechanics in this neck of the woods actually DOES require more money than brains!

The round connector under the hood on BMW cars in the US is not for OBD. All OBD connectors are in the car. If you are trying to hook up a diagnostic tool that does the whole car thats the round plug under the bonnet (hood here in the us). OBD only does emission related, while the round diagnostic port did everything. OBD2 plugs are not round they are trapezoid so you can only hook it up one way.

98 is obd2 compliant. Your car has at least global obd2 communication, you just have to find the datalink. If you give me more specifics I can look it up for you(is it a 3series etc.)

sounds like you need a scantool with european capabilities in that case, you can try baum diagnostics and there are several others with those capabilities

so which you have between the few 1995 GM products that have that unusual mixture? IT exchange into the F bodies wasnt it? you elect an OBD1 scanner with an adapter. in case you merely prefer to work out the codes you merely could leap 2 pins and the CEL will flash and inform you the codes.
