Dangerous? Not necessarily, if you come prepared and hike up that mountain with an experienced guide.
It is the easiest of the 'big mountains' because it is located just south of the equator. Therefore circumstances are moderate, when compared to other 'big mountains' of similar altitude. Still, it gets cold up there.
The biggest concern is the altitude. Low oxygen levels do have an impact, an even if you are well trained you could get sick. Altitude sickness can be very serious, even fatal if you do not pick up the signs and act upon them. A good guide will stay by your side at all times and monitor how you are doing. He will urge you on to make sure you reach the next camp in time for you to have a good rest, and slow you down when you are overdoing it. He will make sure you drink plenty, even if you think you do not need it. He is trained to recognise the first signs of altitude sickness, and when necessary he will decide on your behalf to return when the going really gets too tough.
A good guide is essential. Also you will need a porter to carry your luggage and food, and do the cooking for you. You won't have much energy to do all that yourself after a long days' hiking. And you need to get a permit to allow you to hike up that mountain.
All in all it is very expensive, but also it is a once in a lifetime experience. The best starting points to arrange the trip are Moshi and Arusha.
Good luck!

Kilimanjaro is the easiest of the "great mountains" to hike. The trails are beautiful, safe and well maintained. The camps along the way are good, friendly and fun.
If you have the opportunity, don't miss it. But go slow.
