if you have never ridden a motorcycle before, then DO NOT start on a street bike. Especially a sport bike.
Do yourself a favor and buy an enduro (street/dirt bike).
Spend some time riding off road before you try the streets. Then, start on residential streets, 25-35 mph.
It's not really a matter of learning to ride, it's a matter of learning what how to handle your bike in an emergency situation... riding needs to be second nature.

Oh man, that was my first bike! It was great. I really enjoyed the nimble handling of the 500R, but I quickly got used to the limited power and wanted something more. If I could go back and make my first bike purchase again, I would pick up the Yamaha YZF 600R (not to be confused with the R6).

My buddy bought one as his first bike four years ago and will likely never buy another bike until this one breaks down.

I think 500 is a fine size for a first bike, just take it easy of course. A 250 will get old way too fast.

You can start with a 250, but at least you're not like everyone else on here, whom are 17 year olds saying I'm looking for my first bike and I want a 750. They're stupid, and probably dead by now.

god, I hope you know how to ride.

I rode cruisers for the most part. I'd take it in for routine service, and the owner would give me a loaner. Once, it was a Katana 750. A whole 'nother world from a cruiser.

There are 2 kinds of beginning riders, those who are scared and those who are hurt. I have never met a rider who didn't drop their bike when they first started. And BUY A HELMET!!!!!
