Sorry to upset the others on this subject - but your Xantia does NOT have a bowden cable speedo drive, and the pickoff is from one of the front wheel ABS sensors as the whole thing is electronically sensed.

Before you go any further, take your car to a proper garage and get the car checked on the OBDII diagnostic computer.

This will tell you if its the ABS unit or the ECU for the engine management system is playing up, or ist just a setup problem.

Incidentally - have you changed the brake pads recently?

The guy is taking you for a mug! Speedo is not connected to the ABS in any (direct) way, at most there may be a small electronic digital signal letting the ABS system know the speed of the car so it is possible that the ABS needs a working speedo for correct opration but a broken speedo cable will not damage your ABS in any way! Ditch this mongrel mechanic of yours and get a second opinion. Hope this helps :-}

Ya this fella is trying to screw you big time. The only problem is the electronic speedo drive which you could pick up fairly cheaply in any scrap yard. Get a second opinion nd report the first mechanic to the trading standards

Please get a Haynes manual for your car. They cost 15-20GBP. Even if you aren't able to understand fully how to fix your problem, you will get a much better idea of what could be wrong. It will also defend you against the massive BS you often get from local garages.

Sometimes the guys in Halfords will help you out for free if you ask them, if you buy a lightbulb, for instance and ask them to fit it.

your speedo cable has come undone or broken it will not affect the ABS etc only the speedo and mileometer if you have a sat nav they tell you what speed your travelling at but it is a MOT failure
