Try to explain your situation. If you've been an otherwise good tenant for a long while they may be willing to work with you. If you've only been there a couple of months don't expect much leeway. At the very least you should be prepared to pay something towards the outstanding debt.

I used to be a landlord and accepted half rent for a couple of months from good tenants who had fallen on hard times. They made good on their promises to make up the arrearages when they resolved their problems.

On one occasion I fell sucker to a fairly new tenant's plea for time only to get excuse after excuse when the agreed dates to make things up came and went. She turned into a raving lunatic when I started eviction proceedings. After that one, new tenants got a free release from the lease if they couldn't make the rent. The fight for the $$$ wasn't worth the hassle.

You are very lucky that your landlord has not taken legal action yet.

Why are you so sure you will have the money?

Just try to explain your situation and that you will have the money soon. If they don't like it then they will evict you.
