If you took apart an authentic Louis Vuitton handbag and added up the cost for each piece i.e. each handle, each buckle, the real leather, etc. how much would it be? They sell for over $2000 sometimes and I know that all of the materials needed to make a handbag could not possible add up to $2000. How much would it be if you took it apart piece by piece and added up the cost?

I'm not looking to buy one..I was just wondering. I can't believe the name alone would add that much to the price..what a joke!

Well, not sure about the actual cost of a real bag... I have several real LV bags (and briefcases), but my favorite is one where I purchased a fake one and altered it.

I purchased a fake bag for $20, ripped open the lining, glued cardboard to the bag (to give it the shape that I wanted). Then, I re-attached the lining. After about a year, the handles broke off - so I went to this place in Manhattan called ArtBags and paid to have them make new handles. Apparently, these were "real" leather handles, very similar to the ones used in the real LV bags (ie, they turn a specific color as they age). I paid $350 for the handles. So, all in all, I spent $370 for this bag (which retails for $700-$800 or so). It is my favorite because it's beautiful, looks like the real thing, is unique because it's similar in style to a particular LV line (but the shape has been altered), and I'm not afraid to take it anywhere (I have a briefcase that I paid $4000 for, and it makes me nervous to leave the house with it).

The actual cost of making such a bag (parts and labor) is going to be at most about $40 a bag. You pay for the NAME only. An LV bag isn't that much better quality wise than any other leather, hand-stitched bag.

For example, a 2-liter of coke costs Coke about 8 cents to make.

Sometimes it's not the pieces that make the price so high, it's often the labour involved. If you look at wedding dresses, a lot of them are hand-made and that takes a really, really long time to do... hence an absurdly expensive piece. Purses I imagine are the same way.

I costs no more to make an LV purse than it does to make a purse from KMart. But I don't know too many women that are going to take apart a purse they have spent $2000 on. I have LV, Coach, D & B and Prada. I will tell you that I have never paid $2K for any of my purses.

Consumers aren't paying for the purse they are paying for the label.

Probably about $5, at the most. Plus labor, another 5.

You haven't realized that everything is a ripoff? Just buy a $20 purse from Walmart. Who really cares?

nope it would never add up to $2000. that is a good way of making people understand that sure they ar paing some money for the quality but they are paing a lot of money for the name. it would probably be around $200 becuase i know they do use quality materials.

It is not just the material. 10% material, 20% workmanship and 70% brand tax

Maybe $100, but if you buy one I guess you're paying for the name, I'd never pay that
