Wash it really well with an antibacterial soap. Soaking in warm water will help the throbbing. After soaking - apply some hydrogen peroxide and/or an antibacterial ointment. If you start developing fever or if you see the redness spreading - see a doctor. (They also have special medicines for nail infections at most of your local beauty supply stores.)

Soak it in warm water and Epsom salts, keep it clean and dry. Don't wear a band-Aid on it so long that the skin gets soggy. You can also try hydrogen peroxide (it will sting) to rinse out any dirt or debris that gets in there.
