What was the catalyst?

The invasion of Iraq was the straw that broke the camels back. Invading Afghanistan was tolerable because their government, The Taliban, was protecting Osama bin Laden - the mastermind of the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. The Invasion of Iraq, however, was completely unnecessary and though the propaganda campaign to justify it has been somewhat effective within the United States, it is very clear to the rest of the world that the US sunk to its ethical depths and seized the opportunity to attack Iraq simply because it wanted to. This belligerent arrogance and hypocrisy, which the US tries to disguise as love of freedom and democracy while torturing those it purports to free, is what has turned the world against America.

Depends on what area youre talking about. The whole world didn't all start hating us at once. A lot of people have hated us for a long time over various things. I think what happened is only recently there were countries we actually cared about starting to hate on us. Like when parts of Europe starting going anti-US it was like having a brother turn on you. After the most recent presidential election is when some of those countries got anti-US. They hate Bush so they hate us. They figure we must like him cuz we voted for him twice so now they hate us. Some of them always hated us, like parts of the middle east. They hate us because we made Isreal, so for that Isreal was the catalyst. For the most part, Bush was the catalyst.

The catalyst was adopting a foreign policy of "What's good for America is good for the rest of the world" and trying to force limited views into situations where they won't work.

America has no more freedom than any other country in the western world, so previous remarks are not the reason. I think people just feel that they just push things their own way too much. I think Bush has done the real damage, but Clintons affairs didnt help. American foriegn policy is the real problem, the Iraq war being probably the bigest factor. I have no problem with america personally, and have many american friends.

Having the most powerful military in the World always builds mistrust. Then you use that military to invade another country and your reasons for invading are found to be false/stretched, then you loose credibility. No credibility and a military that can beat everyone else on the planet makes for a very worrisome situation for everyone else in the World.

Then you add all the moments that our leaders did not agree or did not follow up on treaties designed to improve World affairs. It is all just wood on the fire.

Imagine you are in a play ground and biggest guy on the play ground can do what ever he wants. You're going to keep a very close eye on him.

I think it (the worlds contempt) began a while ago some time after the 30's. We started to get arrogant in the 50's. That is when our goverment decided to interject our morals and the thought that if we are "free" then every country should be also. We seem to take on the idea tht we can change the world to what we want it to be. That if given fredom every country must what it. We stick our nose into every other countries buisness then we don't honor them.

i think the world being against america is an illusion. if any countries indeed are against us,and not just participating in these fabricated current events to help move the world into a state of overt global control(which they are),then most people hate us because we are no different than nazi germany.we have fascists in office, corporate c*ck suckers running everything, and we are pushing our morals(which are a joke) on the rest of the world.do you think your grandpa was a hitler fan(just like most politicians secretly were in "our" country at the time )?you'd think people would notice sh*t like this and maybe read a couple books that aren't written by snakes stroking these fascist's d*cks or get news from a source who's intention isn't to decieve and frighten you(any news outside of the mainstream or this country). who shouldn't hate this country is the better question also who shouldnt burn down this union?

Um because of America's foreign policy and it War of Oil.

I do not think that the world is against the American people, only the Government itself.

And I guess that you can not claim that America is the "land of the free" anymore, most of your rights have been eroded by the Patriot Act.

The world turned against us because of our arrogance. Our country may very well be single-handedly destroying the planet. So what if China has a billion people? How many of them drive SUV's or "supersize" everything? We, myself included, take everything for granted. We're like that kid in high school who gets a brand new beamer, crashes it, and daddy buys him a new one the next day.

This is just speculation, but I believe it was at the end of the Cold War. With the threat of a large, expansionist Soviet Union removed (or at least forced into hibernation), the world's gratitude for holding their agression in check was quickly subsumed in jealousy for our place in prominence in helping to shape the course of many nations around the globe.
