Is it because of the culture? Food? Relatively laid-back lifestyle? Natural beauty? Friendly folks? Colleges that are just as good if not better than what the north has to offer? The fact that people are more likely to smile and start a conversation with you?
I live in Kentucky, which prides itself as being a Southern state yet mostly has people who are meaner and more narcisstistic than those in much larger cities like NYC and Boston (believe me, I'VE BEEN AROUND the country.) I want to move to the South in the next 2-3 years. I'm looking forward to the move, as a matter of fact, and I haven't even decided where I'm going to live yet! (BTW, states like KY, WV, VA, MO, DE, and MD don't count, sorry.)

It is not really that great. I would say that it is good for the most part. I have lived in KY and TX and visited FL.

Well, even though I live in Virginia I love Alabama. I actually had never been there, but for some reason I just liked it. When I went there in June I was very pleased with the southern lifestyle. People there are just plain nice. I mean, sure there will be some mean people, but I really didn't see any. Everyone is willing to help you and people are friendly to tourists and seem guienuenly happy that you decided to go and visit. When we were a little lost in Montgomery and were standing around looking confused, a friendly buisness-looking man came over and helped us, we didn't even have to ask.
Also, the south is beautiful! I can't really explain why, but something about it just makes it look more beautiful than anywhere else I've been.
In the south there defenetly is that laid back lifestyle. Up in New York people always seem to be in such a rush, but in Alabama people can always take some time to help someone out, or relax a bit.
Not to mention the speed limit is often faster....

For God's sake, don't move to Mississippi...I live here and it's nothing special...you have been warned.
Mississippi:
- has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in the USA (according to the last stats I read)
- has the poorest pay for teachers in the USA (we're having a pretty serious teacher shortage in the state)
- has the highest high school dropout rates in the USA (according to the last stats I read)
- has too many ignorant and/or stupid people having babies left and right (straining the economy and educational system)...I actually believe some people in the state do not know what a condom or contraceptive is... :(
- currently has a governor that's a lackey and an idiot...he could care less about the state (and believe it or not, he's the governor)
- has the lowest wage per capita in the USA (according to the last stats that I read)
- has a lot of humidity
- has a coastline that is a potential target for hurricanes...not too good for you if you chose to live on the coast :(
- has too many close-minded people...too many people in Mississippi tend to be too conservative
*** By all means, choose another southern state to inhabit...if you have any questions about Mississippi, I'll be happy to answer them the best that I can.

The south is great because of the culture, food, landmarks, and history. Alot of stuff that happened in the past happened in the south. I dont think you'll approved what happened back then, but it help shaped the culture(white or black). If you like the heat come down here in the summer, it is really hot. The only down part is hurricanes and tornadoes, those are killer.
For the most part the south is a good place to stay , if you were born and raise in the south.
I'm in SC

Hi, I live in SOUTHERN Mo and though you say it doesn't count, really where I live it does. I live in Branson Missouri... where we get people in from all over the country... in the summer it turns into a US melting pot,(it is a very touristy place.) It is kinda neat because you can compare the northern additudes, to the hospitable southern ones... and yes, southern people are great. I can walk up to people here in a grocery store and just start a conversation here, whereas when I lived in Ohio, the ppl would look at me like I was CRAZY. I think the reason people in the south are so much nicer is their upbringing, (Though I would have to say Arkansas doesnt count on your list of nicer people having states, as I NEVER met one there I liked... I lived there as well...) Parents still discipline their children and teach them right from worng in the south. When I moved here, I fell in love... maybe it is an idea to travel here and see what I mean. It is spectacular here!)

I don't know. Who said it was great anyway? Well, I for one live in SC and am proud of my state and the South. The thing that I love here though is the country and food. The people are just about the same anywhere for me; you have some nice, some mean, except the accent. I'd take country over city anyday. That's just my personal opinion though.

I live on the MS Gulf Coast. It's hotter than **** here right now. Move north! HAHA! No really, I do enjoy living here for the most part. We have the casinos, nice beaches nearby (FL and AL) and barrier islands that are nice to visit. The people are mostly nice. The food is good. Etc.

I have lived in the South my whole life. My parents are from southern states. Every region has it's qualities and it's drawbacks. It just depends on what you prefer. If course I prefer the South for a lot of reasons: Football, barbeque, Southern Hospitality, not-so-cold winters, and much, much more.

I dont think the south is so great. I have had to live in Georgia for the last 15 years. Would love to get the heck out of here.
But every part of the country has their own foods, culture....etc.

The South is great mainly because of the people, especially Texas. And Texas has everything a person could possibly want.
