Brighton is too far from Bournemouth, but has fast rail links to London. Southampton takes about 75 minutes but is great for road and rail travel.

I would choose Southampton myself. Wish I never moved to Surrey, really.

I would agree with the first answer, Southampton / New Forest area. Im originally from a small village 10 minutes across the solent called Hythe, just outside Southampton. By car it takes about an hour on the motorway back to London, and by train its about 1.10mins direct to Waterloo. There are two lovely beaches in the New Forest, Leap Country Park and Calshot Activity Centre, both are directly opposit the Isle of White. Hovercraft from Southampton to Isle of White is 15 mins. Bournemouth is about 35 mins away by car, and again a direct route from Southampton by train in about 30 minutes also. Southampton also has a great football team, we have had a glitch lately with chairman and upteen managers, but we are on our way back up the premiership, where we rightly belong, as the South Coasts best team. Take a look at our stadium compared to Fratton Park (portsmouth's terrible ground). Southampton also had a great university, brand new shopping centre and a wonderful city centre. Go down fo a weekend, im sure you will really enjoy it.

The ONLY place that is one hour from London AND by the sea is Brighton and surrounding areas - there are good train connections to Bournmouth from there, so you should be pretty set.

How about Bournemouth itself (assuming you mean 1 hour by train)?

Where I live. Portsmouth. Its much better than southampton. I lived there and its cold and unfriendly. Shopping is rubbish. The football team is naff. Portsmouth has better beaches, and is far more cosmopolitan.

Take a look at a map. You will see that you can get two out of those three, but not all three. Sorry!
