Open any folder, tools>folder options>View then check the box that says hide extensions for known file types

.bmp or .mpg or .doc or . are the extensions of a file. By the extension only Windows can identify what kinda file it is. If its a .bmp windows identifies it as a bitmap picture file and will try to open it in Paint or other picture editing program. Similar is the case of all files. So if you rename a file to remove its extension, the program associateion to that file will be lost and when you double click the file, it will ask by which program to open the file. That should not be done. On the other hand you can set the options to not to show the extension. Open any folder, Click Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> and then select (tick) the option to set Hide Extensions for known file types.

Just simply try right clicking on the file and then selecting "Rename"
and just remove the .bmp or whatever from the end of the filename.

Convert them to another format, i.e. .bmp > .jpg
