the whole braking system was replaced by kwik fit in June. When I brake at speed, it slows no problem, however when I brake at very low speeds to come to a halt, there is massive kick back from peddle - feels like driver side front wheel. I need to take it back to KF, but would like some idea of what may be wrong in case ripped off.

Sounds like the brake discs are warped. That would do it.

I think the warped disc suggestion is probably right. Tyler answered first with that one. But you should just double-check whether the judder is coming from the front or back and from which side.

If you've been driving particularly aggressively you may have heated up the discs too much (assuming it's the front - probable) or perhaps the pads are not releasing fully when you release the brake pedal - that would also heat up the discs.

It could possibly be due to the pads being really worn - or someone giving the wheel a good bash. That happened to me when I couldn't remove a wheel (it was tightened way too much by the guys who replaced the tire). I took the car to a local garage thinking they'd have the right tool and they just ended up whacking it off.

When did you last get the pads replaced? It's not that difficult to do - someone you know is probably quite competent.

cheapest things first-
check that the tyres are inflated correctly
check that the wheelnuts are all done up properly

does the car handle fine when you aren't braking?
eg on corners, roundabouts
if not, it may be the steering joint at the front wheels

Brake pads not fitted properly or worn though

brake discs warped- these could be expensive to replace. On some models it may possible to get them "skimmed", ie ground flat again. If new discs then get new pads too.

Warped rotors. Take them down to be turned. When they get hot it cause the metal to distort. Turning them flattens the surface that the pad pushes on. Allowing for smooth braking.

I vote for warped discs. you can get them resurfaced but the labor cost almost equals the cost of new. Have them check struts Idont think cavs have ball joints

its your brake rotors, warped. you can do that by riding them too much till they heat up, or holding you brakes on over hard bumps.
