A good work ethic, like showing up on time, not leaving early, being productive, etc, will really help. Also, having good, quality work is huge. But one of the things often overlooked is attitude. Have a positive attitude, make sure you get along with everyone. There's no need to kiss up to the bosses, but it does help if they feel comfortable around you. For me, attitude is one of the biggest.

Do you job... do it well. Stay out of the personal broo-haha that goes on at work. Be polite and respectful to ALL co-workers - even the ones that annoy you (never know if they will get promoted first and become your boss). Team work - pitch in when people need it. Ask for more responsibility or find ways to make yourself needed more around the office/work site. Be on time, schedule off time (don't take too many "sick" days), and finally dress for the job you WANT!

Doing what several here have suggested should work but if not then do what a colledge professor once told me...Look elsewhere! Someone else is usually will pay more for your experience. My Brother-in-law actually did this and his old company raised the bar to get him back. He makes almost 500,000 per year now...And he has NEVER set foot in a Colledge!! Makes you wonder about the higher education.
