I have seen many that have worked beautifully and may that have not. The most important thing is to communicate with the nurse and doctor to see if anything can be done to make you more comfortable.
An epidural is not designed to make you go completely numb, you should still feel the urge to push.
For me the epidural worked great until I had the urge to push and then it became unbearable again, unfortunately I ended up a section.

The exact thing happened to my sister. With her first her epidural didnt work and the poor girl laid there screaming while the nurses told her to be quiet.
Make sure you tell your doctor AND the person who administers the epidural that your previous one didnt take. My sis did and she felt NO pain. She kept saying "I still feel it". The anesthesiogist gave her more until she couldnt. At one point after giving her so much he said "can you feel this" and he pinched her leg. Of course she didnt. Poor guy gave her so much he said he couldnt give her any more. It was pretty funny.
So bottom line, make sure the docs know your serious and you dont want to feel any pain and he should listen. Good luck with your new bundle of joy.
p.s. I only have one child and my epidural worked. If it takes, it is wonderful. I didnt have ay hallucinations or any problems the previous women had and I hope you have the same.

I arrived at the hospital at 6:30. My daughter was born at 7:45. They issued the drug too late for me to 'enjoy' this euphoria that I have heard many women speak of. True, the pain was reduced, but at what cost? I suffered with some hallucinations afterwards, and numbness that lasted too long. The epidural can be a great relief for pain in childbirth however, if I had to do it again - I would not take the drug. The drug stays in your system far too long. I had trouble with my knees for months afterwards and even fell once.

My epidural didn't quite "take" all the way for my first Cesarean delivery. I had what was called a "hot spot" where I felt the surgery. For my second, which was not an emergency like the first, the anesthesiologist had to administer an extraordinary amount of medication in order for me to not feel it. We were all in the OR and every once in awhile they would stick my belly to see if I could still feel things (without telling me when). When I kept saying "I felt that" the dr would tell the anesthesiologist to administer more. When he balked at one point, my DR said, well, she's still feeling it!! If you have the luxury of time this time, discuss your previous experience with both your OB and the anesthesiologist.

My wife had it twice and feels it helped tremendously. Now, it still hurt - but she feels that the pain was dulled. You should feel the effects shortly after having it administered; it should be noticable. If you do not feel the effect or it is very light - let the anesthesiologist know. Like any medication - they start with the smallest effective dose, but that may not be enough for you. Furthermore, the epidural is injected into a very specific spot - it is not unreasonable that they do not hit the target. It's up to you to let them know what you feel.

my first it did, but my second they didn't give it to me quickly enough and i had natural labor by force unfortunately , lol :) I would try the epidural though because if it works your body will have more energy for pushing when the time comes. Don't be nervous go to a couple of lamaze classes and congrats! Don't sweat it :)

my friends wore off while she was in labor. she ended up being given a bunch of other drugs cause the baby had gotten stuck on her hip and she was in a lot of pain and was hurting too bad to keep pushing. but i've heard of the epidural not working. consult the anesthesiologist before hand so they know about your previous experience

Epidural is heaven sent! I just had that about 6 months ago when I had my baby and I didn't feel a thing! No harm in trying it again, hon! They'll just turn it down when you're dilated enough to start pushing so you can feel the contractions.

I had one w/ all three kids. My first one worked well, which also slows down the labor. The second one didn't have time to work because my daughter popped out faster than anticipated. The third one worked well also, that was a long labor though too.

I had one with my 1 and only pregnancy just 2 weeks ago and it was wonderful. By the time they got done administering it I was then 9 cm dialated. It was great. Also it doesn't really hurt at all....its just a little uncomfortable. Before they do the actual epideral they will give you a local pain med. so you feel no pain during the actual epideral. But I was actually talking during my pushing because I didn't feel the contractions. After the epideral I just felt like I had to poop really bad :) BUT GOOD LUCK AND CONGRATS
