First, don't watch those "Sweet 16" shows on MTV. Ok, what are your child's interests? Booking a hall is always good, b/c you can save money on making food- have family do potluck. Hire a DJ, make it a surprise! That's the best part! Decorate based on what your child likes. When I had mine, my family did an "Under the Sea" theme, b/c I'm obsessed w/ dolphins, sharks, sea life, etc... I Loooved it b/c they were so creative! It was a surprise, and at a hall. We had a live band, but that's b/c it was my brother-in-law's, so it was basically free and that's who I said I would want if I ever had a party, but for my other sister's, they had a DJ. Don't stress it- once the kids get together, they don't even notice anything, but the music and having fun together! Just a hint- you can enlist the help of a best friend to sort of pry to find out what your child WOULD like if they could plan a party of their own- my mom did that. Anyway, hope this helps a little.

If your planning it for your child, ask them. The worst thing you can possibly do is plan a party for someone and get it totally wrong. There is very little "sweet" about being 16 any more, that time has gone unless you're in the white picket fenced suburbs of middle America.

I would suggest you go ahead and ask your child what they want. If you're the sweet 16, make the place accessible by public transport, spacious but not so big it'll appear you've got no friends even though there are loads of people there and fun.

Whatver happens, it's a party so make sure everyone has a good time.

hmmm.... hire a party planner. they are wonderful.

If you have to do without, then hire a good DJ and break out some really good food. Ask friends to help decorate.

A hawaiian luau is easy and fun to do. Ask people to dress up or they'll have to um... what's appropriate for 16 year olds to do (I was going to say take a shot or beer bong). hmmm... well anyway good luck!
