Had a similar problem years ago with a Volvo 440. It kept stalling when slowing down at junctions or traffic lights. The problem was that one of the spark plugs had broken. So change your spark plugs and then get the timing checked, also I would start going to a different garage as all the ones near you seem rubbish at their jobs.

I had a similar problem with a Rover 420GSDi, instead of stalling though it would stop accelerating! It had a faulty brake switch, whereby the engine thought the I was braking and would restrict fuel supply to the engine! This maybe what is up with ur Car!

presumably this car is fitted with Bosch fuel Injection. A very common problem with it, and it affects not only VW`s , is the Idle Air control valve gets "gummed" up. It can be cleaned, but the best cure is to put a new one on. Vauxhall (Opel) cars have the same problem.

I've seen this happen to a car similar to your here in the states. Originally we thought it was the intake, but it turned out to be the fuel pump. Your's is a '99 I dont think you need a tune up yet, but unless someone put sugar in your gas tank, I would check the fuel pump, there could be a small leak, or simply the pump has gone bad...good luck!

try the idle speed control valve which is situated on the side of the throttle body if it is the fault you will have to buy a complete throttle body cause the valve comes with this this part retails from £270+ vat depending on engine code someone with a diagnostics machine will be able to pick up the fault code to confirm this. good luck.

There are many possible reasons:
dirty throttle body, bad airflow sensor, vacuum leak,
problem with wiring, bad ignition wires/spark plugs, etc.
Visit VW dealer for proper diagnostic instead of going to small garages.

if its a petrol engine you need to remove and clean the throttle body, it should last for a bit then but it will happen again even if you fit a new one, as they get coated with oil.
car hast done 50000 miles or so has it?

I agree with Shayna. When you slow down, there is still a small amount of gas being sent to keep your car going. Apparently it's not sending enough gas to keep it going once you're not pressing the gas pedal.
