We live in Wyoming and our land is at at 8000+ feet, so snow load is a consideration. We are a couple, grown kids, so just the 2 of us, so we don't need a ton of room, but want to be comfortable -trying to decide what size yurt, too. Also considering a year-round tipi - so anyone with experiences there to share I would appreciate. There are several larger manufacturers of ready-to-build yurts - we sould be purchasing one of these. I know that you can buy plans and build your own from scratch, but that's not what we are planning to do.

A yurt is a circular shelter, can be temporary or permanent, based on traditional Mongolian design. Popular here in the West.

lots of tipi and tipi-related stuff can be found at panther primitives and reese tipis. y-search for those two websites.
yurt info at yurt dot com.

I don't have any experience in year-round living in these structures, but I got turned on to it when reading "The Last American Man" which documents the life of Eustice (sp) Conway who lived for a while in a tipi year round in the mountains of NC.

I think you can do it, it is just a question of what are you realistically willing to live without. Can you really live without water on tap? Yes! Can you really live using an outhouse? Yes! Can you make it without electricity? Well......who knows!

Take the plunge and let me know what you find out!
