OK, I'll assume you're in the USA. Many times cheaper and faster do not go together. Front wheel drive import cars are popular now and can be made to perform well. There are a lot of companies selling aftermarket performance parts and body kits for them. If American muscle is more your thing, try finding a car or truck you like from the '80s that isn't too worn out. Performance and replacement parts for GM cars of this era are pretty cheap.

Only you can decide what looks nice to you. But for something very fast and very cheap, I'd say the best bargain out there would be an '80s era Camaro or Firebird with the 5.7 liter V8. Their mullet / poser image has kind of hurt their resale value, but they've got a good amount of horsepower and it's easy to give one more. If you like imports, one of your best bets may be a turbocharged, all wheel drive Eclipse (Talon or Laser - they're collectively known as the DSM's). Downside is that if you get a cheap, abused DSM, it can be a reliability nightmare. There are plenty other ones out there, but if you want cheap speed, your best bet is likely to either have a V8 or a turbo.

It all depends on what you like. Do you like the muscle cars of the 70's or are you looking for the little tuner pieces of sh.it that are popular today. My advice is to find a nice looking car to start with and do more than put a far.t pipe on it. Increase airflow to the engine and then work back from there. Most "tuners" do nothing to the air intake and work on cat back stuff which makes the vehicle annoying and does nothing for performance. Read up on engine performance and how to make it better prior to investing $1000 on fancy exhaust systems that make your car sound "Cool".

Do your research and in the long run you'll spend alot less than your friends plus you'll have a better preforming and "cooler" car.
Pick a car you like, not one that everyone else has!!
Good luck!
