The soon-to-be mom is someone that I know through a social organization that we both belong to and we have god conversation when our kids play together, but we don't call each other and chat it up on the phone or anything.

That depends on what your budget is, if you financially cannot get her a WHOLE Lot, then get her what you CAN afford even it's just a small outfit ($5-10 or less) from the clearance rack. You certainly should never spend more than you have on someone you are not that close to, who is NOT family, and IS having a shower after all, she will have other gifts that will be opened at the shower with yours (if they do that sort of thing locally). Obviously you are NOT throwing the shower but who is? Find out if she is REGISTERED first (Target, Babies R US, Baby Depot at Burlington Coat Factory and other places allow Moms-to-be to Register for gifts that really need) , and try to get something on her list if you can.

Sounds you are not close friends, but are good "acquaintances" like any parent who knows another parent from when their kids play together and have some things in common to talk about. so you should get a Great card that congratulates her and if you cannot find a gift that is of some good value then a gift certificate to say Babies R Us or Burlington Coat Factory's Baby Depot or somewhere that is no more than $20-25. Spending more implies that you an afford it and "big ticket" shower gifts (ie strollers, baby carriages are usually given by VERY, very close friends and family or friends who can afford to splurge on something like that.)

Hope this helps!

Go to TJMaxx, they have Kenneth Cole diaper bags that come with onsies inside, for only $20. I saw them on Ebay for $65. They also have beautiful gift sets for around $20 to $25. That is a good amount to spend...

I would say between $20 - $30 at the most. You can always get a basket or a baby bathtub and fill it up w/ inexpensive little gifts... or do like little care package w/ shampoo, wipes, wash cloths, diaper rash cream, brush, baby oil, baby powder, etc.... then it looks like you got her alot but you spent a little :)
Plus, they are things that she will definately use!

$20 is fine. Or in baby clothes terms, just one outfit. If she's registered somewhere, you can get a gift off the regestry that's around $20. No more than that.

Around $20 if it is just an acquaintance. $30-$50 if it is a good friend and $50+ if it is a close relative.

Under $20 bucks. That's a pack of onsies or two, receiving blanket, some little trinket.

Gee, I would say whatever is comfortable for you. When I worked, there were always showers for co-workers and I would usually spend around $20.00.
