No Nikki, I have only been in a few hostels in Europe during college vacation, they were usually in rather unhealthy conditions but generally verrry cheap.

I met great people in these places, which I still keep in touch, I’d say that’s something very rewarding after all...

Depends on the country. I stayed in some hostels in Britian that were in huge extravagant homes and very clean - same for the north. These were of course more expensive. In the south you tend to find places that reflect the local economic conditions and they are "dirt" cheap.
In some cases the "users" have to take responsibility for the conditions as each hostel requires a bit of cleaning up after yourself and some visitors refuse to do that. You have to remember these are not 5 star hotels with all the services.....
I would suggest flip flops in the showers...

No, They are not all dirty and creep. Its just because you aren't using a good travel guide.

In Edinburgh go to Brodies Hostel 2 - It's like a hotel with Hostel prices.

Also, HI Hostels are usually pretty clean, but they don't have the fun personality of other hostels. (they're pretty sterile)

Just enjoy the creepy dirty hostels for what they are, a place to meet people and have a good time. You're travelling make the most of it by experiencing things you've never done before.

It depends where you go. I have been to a number of very clean and professionally run hostels. On the other hand, I have been to some that are questionably rustic to put it mildly. I would say you are on the money with your relating it to the low cost of the accomodations. There are several hostel clubs and sites online that will help you find what it is you are looking for. I will not suggest any as I have not used them much, but if you type the word "hostel" into any search engine you will find one.

Definitions of hostels on the Web:

Establishments providing board, lodging or accommodation for the aged, distressed, or disabled who cannot live independently but do not need nursing care in a hospital or nursing home. Residents are generally responsible for their own provisions, but may be provided with domestic assistance (meals, laundry, personal care). Only hostels subsidised by the Commonwealth are included in statistics.

Accommodation that contains rooms used for residential purposes usually on a temporary basis. It is different from an HMO (see below) in that a basic level of service, such as meals, is provided for residents.

Hostels (or youth hostels) provide short-term accommodation to travelers, particularly encouraging outdoor activities and cultural exchange for the young.

yes it's because they're sooo inexpensive.

They're not run by hotel franchisors like Choice, Best Western and such. Really the only codes that have to live up to are the building codes but in large cities like Paris, Prague, Berlin and Madrid there are so many buildings that inspectors cannot keep a close eye on everything.

The owners cannot afford to have sweeping renovations because they're simply not getting the revenue of a chain hotel or an apartment building.

Some hostels I have been to have been that way but others are very clean and nice. I think it depends on the management of the hostel and also what country you are in. Hostels in Germany, Austria, Denmark and Switzerland were very nice. Italy and France were not so nice

Because cheap people stay in them and more than likely cheap people have no consideration of others property THUS making a nasty mess of the hostels.

Or the place was a crap hole to begin with and that's why it's so cheap to stay in.
