I found it to be cheaper. Last year I replaced my 20 year old fridge with a new energy efficient one. I saved on repair bills and on electric consumption. electric bill decreased by about 15 dollars.

If you're planning on selling the house, fix the old fridge, don't replace it. A new fridge won't add that much to the value of the house anyway. Most people expect to either NOT get any appliances when they buy, or plan to replace them all anyway to match thier new decor. Why get them a new fridge? Just put one in there that works...

When you are considering selling the house you need to remember, something new that is clean and shiny does not have to be expensive as compared to that big unit that looked great 20 years ago and could hold a side of beef.

Figure 20% energy savings with a new unit. It would depend on the cost of the repair.

A new appliance sells the kitchen, is more energy efficient & your investment not only pays for itself but you'll likely get a 3 fold or more return.

Keep the old fridge or look for a used appliance store and deal with it that way

replace the fridge. when people walk into homes they like to see nice things. It just might add more incentive for the buyer.
