This is my first year watching the Premier League, I ordered the entire season through my Television provider, I really don't know what to expect, Is there anything I should watch out for or pay attention to? Any players to really keep an eye on? I am from America where MLS is pretty boring, but I love Football(soccer) and I heard The UK premiership is the best...so what should I know about how you play things? Do you have playoffs? What happens after a team wins the championship?

first off congrats on discovering the premier league, expect the fastest paced league in the world. the worlds most exciting players are here. chelsea are going for a 3rd successive title while sheffield united, watford and reading will be looking to stay up.

how we play things - there are 38 games for each team, each team plays everyione else twice (one home, one away) and its 3 points for a win, a pioint for a draw and 0 for a loss, (no penalty shoot-outs in the league and no bonuses for goals scored). if a team wins the league then thats it, theyre the champions, there are no end of season play-offs in the premiership. the teams that finish 1st ,2nd 3rd and 4th qualify qualify for the uefa champions league(europes premier inter-country tournament) and 5th and 6th qualify for the uefa cup (europes 2nd competition).

if a team finishes in the bottom 3 places they are relegated to the coca cola championship which is the league below the premiership. they are replaced the follwing season by the top 2 from the coca cola championship and a promotion play off winner which is one of the four teams below the top 2 in that league.

last season chelsea won the title - arsenal, man united and liverpool enter the uefa champions league. birmingham, west brom and sunderland were relegated and taking their places this season are reading, sheffield united and play-off winners watford

theyre are also 2 knockout cup competitins, the Carling cup - which has all the 92 professional clubs in englands top four leagues taking part (premiership, coca cola championship, coca cola league 1, coca cola league 2)

then theres the FA cup, the worlds biggest Knockout competition, which starts off in august with all of englands amatuer teams in the qualifying rounds (yes theres shitloads of them ) coca cola league 1 and 2 teams enter in Round one in october/november and premiership and coca cola championship clubs enter in round 3.

in both cmpetitions one defeat and your out, both competitions are known for lower league teams knocking out premiership teams (last year coca cola league 2 team grimsby beat premier league side tottenham hotspur 1-0)

Both tournaments have no bearing on the league. a team that wins either of the cups also qualify for the uefa cup

p.s watch out for my team CHARLTON ATHLETIC

The English Premier League is usually recognised as the most entertaining football league in the world. The standard of play has risen in the last ten years as there has been a flood of top class foreign talent entering all twenty teams in the league.
There will be 38 games played by each side, and the team on top of the table after all 38 games have been played will be the champions (there are no playoffs).
The teams to watch who play the most entertaining football are the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United.
The best team over the last two years has been Chelsea.
However, not all the games are exciting but stick with it, because the best games are all out action.
My team is Middlesbrough, so look out for them.

Get ready for the most intense football season in your life. There are no playoffs like your fag football, every game counts, 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw and the points add up through the weeks. Fantasy football makes the EPL that must better, friends from school and I make teams and enter with 20 dollars and the best fantasy team wins the money. The 3 last place teams get relegated into the coca-cola championship league and the champion just get the trophy and celebrate in their stadium.

The EPL makes the MLS look like 5 years old football.

I'll go in a slightly different direction so you don't have to read fifty versions of the same old sludge. I agree with you on the MLS because while I feel an obligation to support our American players and league. But the EPL is totally different, it has an intensity and pace that shamed the MLS. Plus there are rivalries that are 100 years and more in the making. At the end of the regular season when teams are fighting relagation, there are literally two races of interest for fans. The raw emotion of teams facing the drop is as good as it gets. And as a bonus temas that would pack it in at the end of the season (aka Kansas City Royals) now feel compelled to go out like a pack of wild dogs. Watch an EPL game along with all the previews and post game reviews and its hard to work up much enthusiasm for the MLS. By the way check out Sports Illustrated Online for a piece on The Sports Guy deciding to be an EPL fan this year and his thoughts on selecting a team to support.

Ofcourse,The English Premier League/Barclays Premiership is definitely the best to watch! There's about 20 teams compete for the championship title, but the ones are worth to watch are Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United & Chelsea matches. since these are the only teams who have held those Barclays Premiership titles/trophy - so you can expect great games from them. there's no play off, each team will play against each other either Home ground(their stadium), or Away Ground(opponent's stadium). you can tell by from the kits they are wearing(squads)! they won the title by having the highest points for example last season 2005/2006, Chelsea are the champions, with 91 points, Manchester United with 83 points, Liverpool with 82 points & Arsenal with 67 points. these are the top fours. so, it's going to be great season. 2006/2007 officially starts on the 19th of August, but before that, there will be community shield games, UEFA qualifying games,Friendly club matches and so on. so enjoy!

Cheers!

The English Premier League is probably the best league in the world & Asian countries like mine in Malaysia have full coverage of their matches every week. Other countries like Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, India & Vietnam also broadcast the matches every week.

many world class player have played in the English Premier League & coming this August, players like Ballack, Shevchenko & Rosicky will be playing for their new teams.

i have watched the premier league since it began in 1993 & support Liverpool FC.

the new season of the English Premier League will began on Saturday, 19 August 2006. there are 20 teams in the league & each team will play against each other home & away from August 2006 to May 2007.

at the end of the season, the top 4 teams in the league will qualify for the Europe's premier club competition, UEFA Champions' League the following season. the 5th & 6th placed team will play in the UEFA Cup, Europe's second cup competition.

there is no play-off matches involved at the end of the championship. 3 teams that finish in the bottom three places will be relegated to the England's second tier league, The League Championship the following season.

No playoffs...just the regular season. Top team (point-wise) is the champion. Places 1-4 qualify for the next season's Champion's League. 5-7 I believe qualify for UEFA Cup. 18-20 (last places) are relegated and three teams from 1st division (The Championship) replace them. It's basically like the worst three baseball teams in the majors being replaced by the top three AAA teams every year.

Just watch the games every week...you'll learn a ton.

In addition to the Top Four, Tottenham is an up and coming team that plays an exciting style.

Also, some Americans are in the league:

Brian McBride and Carlos Bocanegra play for Fulham
Claudio Reyna plays for Manchester City
Brad Friedel is the keeper for Blackburn Rovers.
Jay Demirit plays for Watford
Bobby Convey plays for Reading

The players to watch are those from the top four teams
Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool. The other teams have one or two exciting players but these 4 have the best overall.
