Is there a certain age or weight? Of course I would be using a PFD, but is there a recommended age?

My view of babies on boats is do not take them until they will get something out of it. A one month old baby will get nothing out of going for a boat ride. How will he or she know anything different from being on land? And there is a risk that something could happen and the baby could get hurt or worse. So why take the risk (even with a life jacket) with no benefit to the baby?

My kids first went sailing when they were 3 years old. Truthfully, they really didn't start enjoying it until they were probably 5 years old.

Unless your child has specific health conditions that could be influenced by going onto a boat, the answeer is, as soon as it is born.

If your point is when is the child old enough to be safe playing while you are on a boat, then the answer is still the same - you have to exercise the same amount of care, caustion and supervision as anywhere else.

My brother and his family LIVE on a 42-foot sailboat. The babies came home from the hospital nursery to the boat. The boys were raised aboard.

If you are unfamiliar with boats and ships, which seems to be the case because of this question, then be sure YOU dress properly, with good shoes susitable for the type of boat you're on, and listen to instructions from those aboard who understand the environment and how to be safe. You'll all have a good time!

If you plan on taking your infant on a boat before the age of 1 yr old, I would make sure you are just slowly cruising along. Before the age of 1, the infant's brain is still very delicate and can bounce around inside the skull and do some damage if you are riding fast on choppy water.

I'm not taking my baby out on a boat until she is old enough and the right weight to wear the life jacket.
