The signs might be different depending on where the gasket is burnt:
Coolant in the engine oil (whitish color),
oil in the radiator,
coolant going low constantly,
boiling coolant, overheating,
engine misfires at startup, white smoke,
excessive pressure in the cooling system

White smoke billowing out of your exhaust, coolant and oil mixing to make a chocolate milk type of mixture in the radiator overflow tank or the engine itself. Could also be a cracked head if the vehicle is known for it.

A small leak : only over-heats occasionally
Medium leak : white smoke out the tail pipe & over-heating
Large leak : white smoke out the tail pipe, water mixed with oil ( caremel colored oil), very rough idle, over heating.

Oil dripping from the engine.
Water in the oil. Check the dipstick. If there's water in the oil, the end of the stick will be all bubbly.
